Castelli del Grevepesa, a Wine Co-operative, was established in 1965 by a small group of eighteen winegrowers in Tuscany on the initiative of Mr. Gualtiero Armando Nunzi. Their intention was to bring together a group of people from different areas of the Chianti Classico region whose common purpose was to preserve the centuries old traditions of the Tuscan viticulture.
Since its foundation Castelli del Grevepesa has concentrated on producing high quality wines by carefully selecting the grapes and by complying with the strict regulations of the Law and the Consorzio "Gallo Nero" (Black Rooster).
From the wide expansion of the vineyards planted and cultivated by the members themselves on the hills of the Chianti Classico region and after years of experience within these territories, small areas or even single vineyards have been identified where the grapes with superior qualitative characteristics can be cultivated. Among these areas the most renowned are: Panzano, a fortified medieval village built in the vicinity of our Etruscan and later Roman settlement; Lamole, a small village high up on the South-East Hills of Greve in Chianti and Castle of Bibbione, ancient Manor, which was property of Niccolò Machiavelli.
Today, Castelli del Grevepesa has approximately 120 members, which widen mainly in the environs of Greve in Chianti.
Most of the Associated Vintners have their estates in the Chianti Classico Area which widen mainly in the environs of Greve in Chianti; Mercatale Val di Pesa; San Casciano Val di Pesa; Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Barberino Val d’Elsa.
Our production is based on the Sangiovese grape, which is produced in 18 different areas for an amount of approximately 300 hectares, (about 750 acres), in the Chianti Classico, so that we are able to create unique wines. Only our Company achieves these results, keeping everything separate.
